The Qur'an on Embryology

During the course of an online discussion last week, a non-Muslim acquaintance made a sweeping statement about the Qur’an needing to be updated. While I immediately corrected him about making a statement without having read it or knowing about it, it set me thinking.

So, from this post onwards, I’ll try for every alternate post on the Qur’an for a while. And at the end of a few posts, I’ll let him decide.

So, RD, this is for you!

In one of my earlier posts (July 09), I had written about the water cycle. In that, I had mentioned that I would write about human embryology later. So, let’s start with that.

In approximately 610 A.D., the first verse of the Qur’an was revealed. And it says-

Iqra/ bi-ismi rabbika allathee khalaqa. Khalaqa al-insana min AAalaqin

Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created. Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood. (Qur’an 96:1-2; Translation by Yusuf Ali)

The word ‘alaq’ in Arabic has multiple meanings. One of them is a drop of congealed blood. Another meaning is something that clings – a leech-like substance.

Describes the state of the foetus in the first two weeks very succintly, doesn't it?

There is another verse, which says-

Inna khalaqna al-insana min nutfatin amshajin nabtaleehi fajaAAalnahu sameeAAan baseeran.

Verily We created Man from a drop of mingled sperm, in order to try him: So We gave him (the gifts), of Hearing and Sight. (Qur’an 76:2; Translation by Yusuf Ali)

Mingled? Now what’s that?

Possibility one – we know that the zygote is formed from the mingling of the sperm with the egg. And most people even in the ancient times knew this. So what’s new?

But consider the word – mingled sperm. Sperm. Not mingled liquids, but mingled sperm.

Only in the past half a century or so, with advances in medical research and the invention of powerful microscopes, do we know that the semen doesn't just contain sperm, but fluids secreted by several glands during ejaculation.

During the sexual act, semen travels from the epididymis through the vas deferens, where it picks up a fluid rich in fructose - a sugary substance that acts a bit like rocket fuel. Other fluids kick in along the way to the urethra, from the prostate gland, the Cowper's glands and the seminal vesicles - each one having a role to play.

The finished product contains approximately just 10% sperm. The rest consists of enzymes, vitamin C, calcium, protein, sodium, zinc, citric acid and fructose sugar.

It gets more interesting.

Khalaqakum min nafsin wahidatin thumma jaAAala minha zawjaha waanzala lakum mina al-anAAami thamaniyata azwajin yakhluqukum fee butooni ommahatikum khalqan min baAAdi khalqin fee thulumatin thalathin thalikumu Allahu rabbukum lahu almulku la ilaha illa huwa faanna tusrafoona.

He created you (all) from a single person: then created, of like nature, his mate; and he sent down for you eight head of cattle in pairs: He makes you, in the wombs of your mothers, in stages, one after another, in three veils of darkness. Such is Allah, your Lord and Cherisher: to Him belongs (all) dominion. There is no god but He: then how are ye turned away (from your true Centre)? (Qur’an 39:6; Translation by Yusuf Ali)

Three veils of darkness.

Modern studies in embryology have proved that the foetus in the womb is covered first by the anterior abdominal wall of the mother, the uterine wall and then the amnio-chorionic membrane.
Let’s look at a couple more verses before I end.

Walaqad khalaqna al-insana min sulalatin min teenin. Thumma jaAAalnahu nutfatan fee qararin makeenin. Thumma khalaqna alnnutfata AAalaqatan fakhalaqna alAAalaqata mudghatan fakhalaqna almudghata AAithaman fakasawna alAAithama lahman thumma ansha/nahu khalqan akhara fatabaraka Allahu ahsanu alkhaliqeena.

Man We did create from a quintessence (of clay). Then We placed him as (a drop of) sperm in a place of rest, firmly fixed. Then We made the sperm into a clot of congealed blood; then of that clot We made a (foetus) lump; then we made out of that lump bones and clothed the bones with flesh; then we developed out of it another creature. So blessed be Allah, the best to create! (Qur’an 23:12-14; Translation by Yusuf Ali)

4 stages clearly mentioned: Alaqah (leech-like) - which is how the foetus implants itself in the uterus; then a mudghah (lump) – which is really how it looks after a couple of weeks of absorbing nutrients; then flesh and bones – which starts from about week four onwards; and then finally the birth.

Falyanthuri al-insanu mimma khuliqa. Khuliqa min ma-in dafiqin. Yakhruju min bayni alssulbi waalttara-ibi.

Now let man but think from what he is created! He is created from a drop emitted. Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs (Qur’an 86:5-7; Translation by Yusuf Ali)

Let me copy from Dr. Zakir Naik on this - In embryonic stages, the reproductive organs of the male and female, i.e. the testicles and the ovaries, begin their development near the kidney between the spinal column and the eleventh and twelfth ribs. Later they descend; the ovaries stop in the pelvis while the testicles continue their descent before birth to reach the scrotum through the inguinal canal. Even in the adult after the descent of the reproductive organ, these organs receive their nerve supply and blood supply from the Abdominal Aorta, which is in the area between the backbone (spinal column) and the ribs. Even the lymphatic drainage and the venous return goes to the same area.

There are many more verses, but not many people read long posts (or even long news articles) nowadays. Hence, in reader interest, let me stop here with two thoughts that I leave behind.

How could an unlettered – illiterate – person living in the desert of Arabia could have known all this?

More importantly, if this book, revealed between approx. 610-633 A.D., contains such verses that are in perfect harmony with modern medical science, does it need to be updated, or does our knowledge of it needs to be improved?

More on Cosmology in the next post, Insha Allah. Till then, just think about this!

  2. Islam or Existance of Quaran is not more than 1700 years.India and central asia is well known for its scientific,Mathematical, architectural, medical, astronomical advances for last 5000 years so i feel already existing knowledge is explained in the verses in simple language so that everybody can understand it easily.Central asia and south east asia used to have vedic and after that buddhist knowledge and culture for more than 5000 years now.one can still find idols of Ganapati and Buddha in afganistan and border areas of Pakistan which were destroyed by Taliban. These cultures were wiped out after emergence of Islam but knowledge remained with existing societies.Moghuls and other nomades tried the same from 14th century till 18th century in India and they were successful partially by destroying well developed cultural and scientific knowledge centers in northern and southern India and in central Asia also.

I agree that knowledge persisted in the world prior to Islam (more than 1400 years ago), as Allah is the Dispenser of Knowledge. But it was not as detailed as Qur'an has portrayed.

We came to know that the sun was revolving around the earth, then the correction was made that the earth revolves around the sun. When did this correction happen????
It was after Islam brought Qur'an and when it somehow made way and was studied by scientists that this information was revealed.
I'd suggest you have a look at this:

  4. Consider this verse from Sura Luqman (31:29) from the holy Qur’an [15]:
Hast thou not seen how Allah causeth the night to pass into the day and causeth the day to pass into the night, and hath subdued the sun and the moon (to do their work), each running unto an appointed term; and that Allah is Informed of what ye do?
In this verse Allah clearly says that he is the one who converts the day into night and vice versa; subjected the sun and the moon to follow a fixed orbit. We find many similar verses elsewhere in the Qur’an as well. Here are a few samples: Sura Ya-Sin (36:38), Sura Az-Zumar (39:5), Sura Al-Rad (13:2), Sura Al-Anbiya (21:33), Sura Al-Baqara (2:258), Sura Al-Kahf (18:86), Sura Ta-Ha (20:130), just to name a few. However, even a thorough, painstaking search of the entire Qur’an does not show a single verse anywhere in it that supports the scientific reality of the rotation of earth. According to Allah, the earth is motionless, completely static. In Sura An-Naml (27:61) it is stated clearly:
Is not He (best) Who made the earth a fixed abode, and placed rivers in the folds thereof, and placed firm hills therein, and hath set a barrier between the two seas? Is there any Allah beside Allah? Nay, but most of them know not!
In the same vein, Sura Al-Rum (30:25), Sura Fatir (35:41), Sura Luqman (31:10), Sura Al-Baqara (2:22), Sura An-Nahl (16:15) exhorts the Allah’s decree that the earth is completely immovable.
‘Please show a just a single verse in the Qur’an that uses the two words ‘Ard’ and ‘Falak’ side by side’,

    Flat Earth
In Islam, it is compulsory to offer prayers five times a day. Preset times are appointed for these prayers. Offering of prayers apart from these set times are forbidden. For example, a Muslim cannot pray at sunrise, at sunset or at midday. We know from the diurnal rotation of earth that, at any fixed time, the sun is seen at any position on earth and as such, a prayer can be offered at any site on the earth. What does this mean? Consider the following fact. When the sun is rising at Barisal (a district in Bangladesh), it has still not risen at Calcutta (in West Bengal, India). However, in Chittagong (another port city in Bangladeh), the sun is already up. So, when offering prayer at Barisal is haram (forbidden), it is not haram at Calcutta or at Chittagong. Thus, can we find any justification for imposing a ban on offering of prayers at some other times apart from the set times of prayers? Aroj Ali Matbor, the rationalist, in his book mentioned before has posed a very interesting question: Suppose, a Muslim, after offering the Zuhr prayer at 1:30 PM, leaves for Mecca. Arriving in Mecca, he will be surprised to note that it is yet not noon there. So, shall he offer another Zuhr prayer at Mecca too? The answer to this enigma is actually contained in the question itself. Aroj Ali, himself has answered this question in a rational way. According to him, there was a time when the concept of earth as stationary and flat was very much in vogue. From this perception, the idea of fixed times for prayers emerged—he opines. Nonetheless, this old concept is now dead; instead, the modern science has proved that the earth is round and in motion. That is why complications have arisen while trying to fit the modern day life-style with age-old religious doctrines.

To begin with, I am impressed with your study of the Qur'an. Looking at that, I really need to put in more hours for Qur'anic Studies. Having said that, please consider my humble recommendation that when you take up the case of researching about Islam (especially Qur’an and Science), please use Edward de Bono’s Parallel Thinking in assessing the information from both the sides (pros and cons) before you come to any conclusion, which will be the best approach for you to come to any conclusion (as a person of understanding/reason).
You have raised a concern that Qur’an doesn’t support the modern day scientific establishments that "Earth is Spherical" and that "Earth Rotates". Insha'Allah. I will try to address both, "Rotation of the Earth" and that the "Earth is NOT Flat", with references from the Qur’an that have been recorded by Scientists and Researchers.
Before we begin on the replies, I wanted all of us to come at a common level with respect to Islamic Fundamentals and Creed. Insha’Allah, this will help us better understand the subject of concern and how to address it in detail. Please find below detailed information, classified in the sequential order of study.
    1. Tawheed (Oneness of Allah)

    2. Islamic Creed (Aqeedah) with regards to Allah, His Names & Attributes, and the Qur’an (as understood by the Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa’)
    http://islammessageofpeace.blogspot.com/2010/03/islamic-creed-aqeedah-with-regards-to.html

    3. Qur'an is a Book of Signs

    4. Matters mentioned in Qur’an that have not been proven by Science yet

    5. Language of the Qur’an (Arabic)
    http://islammessageofpeace.blogspot.com/2010/03/language-of-quran-arabic.html
All the above categorization and explanation are just a snippet of what we Muslims need to believe and practice. I have tried my level best to summarize each topic with references for further study. In general, each topic has sub-branches, which can be studied in detail, based on interest and likings.

Let’s come back to the replies for your comments. Below is a detailed response to your claims:
    1. Earth is NOT Flat (according to the Qur’an)

    2. Rotation of the Earth (and its Direction proved by the Qur’an)

Alhamdulillah, Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. Actually, according to a report at Fox News (dated 30-MAR-2008), Islam has surpassed Roman Catholicism, as 19.2% of the population of the world practice Islam, and are still growing, Subhan’Alah. [http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,343336,00.html]
I would ask you to stop for a moment and think about what Allah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) says in the Surah al-Asr (Ch.103) of the Qur’an:
"By time, Indeed, mankind is in loss, Except for those who have believed and done Righteous Deeds, and advised each other to the Truth, and advised each other to Patience."

I understand, now, that this subject and all its related topics have been explained to you in a clear and proper manner.
If Yes, then what is stopping you now from saying your Shahaada (The testimony that THERE IS NO GOD BUT ALLAH, AND PROPHET MUHAMMAD IS HIS LAST AND FINAL MESSENGER) and accept Islam.
If No, then you must really wonder about your true intentions and the reason why you asked these questions in the first place. Then, I advise you to go back to the basics, back to your own heart, and ask yourself, why is it that you are doing all this, and what is the purpose of your research. If your intentions are pure and you are sincere in searching for the Truth, Allah will surely guide your heart, after giving you the correct understanding of that which is causing confusion and doubt to your mind with the authentic proofs.

And if you feel that your intentions are sincere and pure, then you must continue in you pursuit of finding the Truth (www.islam-guide.com). Insha’Allah, you will be guided to the Truth, regarding the correct understanding of that which is causing confusion and doubt to your mind with the authentic proofs.

Allah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) says in the Qur’an:
"Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding."

With this I conclude by saying that All the good in this reply is from Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) and all the mistakes are from me and Shaitaan (the accursed).

And Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) knows best.

  7. @Swap its good to see your knowledge i am sure most of the thing what you have shared with us is picked up from some anti islamic site and has been pasted here with all due respect i would like to clarify all your misconceptions step by step i would be posting it one by one.. Before i start posting i would want you to ponder on the verses and refer to authentic interpretation rather than just visiting a site cutting and pasting it here i suggest you read things with an open mind and sort mind block would not help you in understanding the truth . I dont mean to offend you in anyways. Arabic is a vast language and every word has several meanings.

Anyways let me begin with the following verse followed by the explanation :
Allah says: (Have you not seen how your Lord spread the shadow. If He willed, He could have made it still - But We have made the sun its guide, then We withdraw it to Us a gradual concealed withdrawal.) [Surat Al-Furqan, verses: 45, 46].

Almighty God talks about the movement of the shadow on the ground, and that God be He exalted has made the sun a guide for this shadow and (spread) means that it moves and sweeps away all what encounters it. This means that God be He exalted is telling us that the shadow moves and lengthens and this is definitely because of the earth's movement according to the sun.
But God be He exalted told us that the sun is a guide to the shadow's movement. And we know from astronomy that the indication on the movement of an object is the stable thing that is measured according to it the moving object. For example, we say that the car moves with a speed of 100 km/hour according to a stable thing. That's how the shadow moves according to the movement of the earth and the sun is stable with respect to the earth because the earth rotates around it.
It was shown that the earth isn't stable as it was thought in the past, but it revolves around the sun and around itself. Therefore as a result of this movement, the length of the object's shadow always changes due to the movement of the earth around the sun and around itself.he length of the shadow changes because of the rotation of the earth around itself. And due to the rotation of the earth around the sun, the length of the shadow slightly changes and varies according to the four seasons. And this is what the Quran referred to in the above verses.. The Quran needs to be read with an open mind and with wisdom and understanding.

In Allahs saying: (Have you not seen how your Lord spread the shadow. If He willed, He could have made it still - But We have made the sun its guide) an indication to the rotation of the earth around itself and the sun is the guide, i.e., the sun is the body that the movement is measured according to it.
And in His saying: (then We withdraw it to Us a gradual concealed withdrawal) an indication to the rotation of the earth around the sun because the length of the shadow changes not only in day and night but also according to the seasons of the year as the earth rotates around the sun and it inclines on its axis of rotation for about 23 degrees, therefore the length of the shadow varies due to the angle that the sunrays fall in.

These facts weren't known at the time of the descending of Quran, therefore these verses are considered to be a sign of the scientific miracles in the holy Quran, as they talked about the rotation of the earth around itself and around the sun.
The Arabic word falak has often been translated as 'orbit' or 'sphere' depending on the context of the verse some other interpretation of the word A sort of axle, like an iron rod, that a mill turns around; a celestial sphere, orbit, sign of the zodiac, speed, wave etc...

Inshallah i shall continue more on my next post.

  8. @ Swap please find the below for a better understanding of how words are interpreted in Arabic and i guess this should clear ur misconception about flat earth.: -

    Transalation Yusuf Ali:
    [Quran 079:030] And the earth, moreover, hath He extended (to a wide expanse);
    [Quran 079:031] He draweth out therefrom its moisture and its pasture;
    Transliteration:
    [079:030] Waal-arda baAAda thalika dahaha
    [079:031] Akhraja minha maaha wamarAAaha

    Daha دحا means:
دحا (daha):Caused it to move, pushed it, or threw it.
(The Noble Quran, 37:8-9) And they're cast away from every side, repulsed, for they are under a perpetual penalty.
دحرجَ (dahraja): to roll, roll along, to roll down.
    Translation Yusuf Ali:
[Quran 084:006] O thou man! Verily thou art ever toiling (i.e., advancing) on towards thy Lord- painfully toiling,- but thou shalt meet Him.
    Transliteration:
[084:006] Ya ayyuha al-insanu innaka kadihun ila rabbika kadhan famulaqeehi

    • كادح (kadahan) and كدحا(Kadihu) are derived from (daha)دحا, and they mean to move! O man, you are moving - you are advancing - towards your LORD.

دحا (daha): و في حديث أبي رافع: كنت أُلاعب الحسن و الحسين, رضوان الله عليهما, بالمداحي, هي احجار أمثال القِرصة
In the above Hadith of Abi Rafiaa': I used to play with Al-Hasan and Al-Hussein, may Allah Almighty be pleased with them, with AL-MADAAHI, which means STONES that look like AL-QIRASAH.
دحا (daha): المداحي هي احجار أمثال القِرصة Al-madaahi are stones that resemble AL-QIRASAH.

    So what does Al-Qirasah mean?
According to Lisan Al-Arab dictionary [1], Book 4, Page 516
    • القِرصة (al-qirasah): قرِّصي العجين أي سوِّيه قِرصة Cut the dough into small round pieces.

    • القِرصة (al-qirasah): قرص الشمس اي عينها The qurs of the sun means the eye of the sun, which is round.

المدحرج (al-mudahraj): المُدوَّر what is round or circular.
دحا (daha): دحّ في الثّرى بيتاً إذا وسعه He expanded the house.
    • دحى (daha): الدُّحُحْ (al-duhuh), which is plural of دحى daha, which means: الارضون الممتدّة expanded earths.
دحا (daha): مدحوحاّ أي مُسوّى evened, balanced, equaled, leveled.
دحا (daha): الدّواح أي العظيم الشديد العلو al-dawwah is something that is great, extremely powerful, and exalted.
دحا (daha): الدِّحْية هو رئيس الجُند, و به سمِّي دِحية الكلبي Al-dihya is the leader of the soldiers, and from this was named Dihya Al-Kalbay, who was one of Prophet Muhammad's close Companions.
    • الدِّحْية هو رئيس القوم و سيدهم Al-dihya is the chief of the tribe or the group and the BEST AMONG THEM و سيدهم.

  9. Continuation of the previous post ...

Planet earth is indeed the best planet in our Solar System. It is the only planet that has water, life and Paradise-like Scenic Views. The others are dead planets with no life like that of earth's exists on them. See my notes about this below.

    دحا (daha): ROUND and SPHERICAL:
    • إندحَّ بطنه إندحاحاّ اي إتّسع His tummy became round and bigger.

    • In Prophet Muhammad's Hadith: كان لأسامة بطننٌ مُندحٌ اي متسع Osama had a round and big tummy.

    • و بطنٌ مُنداحُ أي خارخٌ مُدوّر His tummy is mun-daahun means it is OUT THERE AND ROUND مُدوّر.

    • و رجلٌّ دحدحُ اي قصير غليظ البطن A man is dahda-hun which means he is short, stocky and has a big and fat tummy.

    • الدحداح هو المستدير الململم The dahdaah is the person who is ROUND and STOCKY.

    • الدِردِحة من النساء التي طولها و عرضها سواء Al-dir-dihati from the women is the one whose height and width look the same! SHE LOOKS ROUND, and the by the way, the distance between the earth's north and south poles is approximately only 45 miles shorter than the earth's width.

دحا (daha): الدوحة أي المظلة العظيمة Al-Doha, as in Qatar's capital, means a big umbrella.

    Translation Yusuf Ali:
    [Quran 079:030] And the earth, moreover, hath He extended (to a wide expanse);
    [Quran 079:031] He draweth out therefrom its moisture and its pasture;

    • It also means that Allah Almighty Made a protective ceiling or umbrella for the earth, which without it, NO WATER COULD POSSIBLY EXIST ON EARTH!
So based on all of these meanings, what do we find? We find that:
1- The earth is a moving object that was pushed or thrown by Allah Almighty into space.
2- The earth is a qurs and indahhat and is dihdaaha, which means it is a round and a spherical object.
3- The earth has expanded, and from that expansion, all of the huge bodies of water that we have today from oceans, seas, lakes and rivers were extracted AND/OR FORMED from the earth with the aid of its protective atmosphere.
4- The earth is mad-hooha ( مدحوحا ), which is balanded and evened.
5- The earth is dihya, which means it is the best among its group. This is true since all of the planets in our solar system are pretty much similar to our moon. They are lifeless and have no life and no water in them.
6- The earth is also dahdah and dahdaah, which means it is round and compressed.
7- The earth has a protective umbrella and ceiling above it.
All of this perfectly fits our planet earth! And even if we just take the EXPANDED interpretation alone and leave out the rest, then Noble Verses 79:30-31 are still quite Miraculous because, indeed the waters that we have today all came to existence in such a large and massive quantity ONLY AFTER THE EARTH BEGAN TO EXPAND with of course the aid of our protective atmosphere; all working together.

  10. Dear Sir,

I request u to explain me the way I have done instead of providing me links which I have to go and visit .Majority of the links don’t open due to internet restrictions.

    Dear Baig Sir,

Allah says: (Have you not seen how your Lord spread the shadow. If He willed, He could have made it still - But We have made the sun its guide, then We withdraw it to Us a gradual concealed withdrawal.) [Surat Al-Furqan, verses: 45, 46].

Dear Sir, If I read this as a layman without taking into consideration any of the astronomical knowledge we know….this verse don’t indicate revolutions of earth…

How this verse indicates rotation of the earth around itself??

Ur explanation of verses is based on existing knowledge of astronomy and being Muslim u r unnecessarily linking it with Holy Quaran …

    Qur’an -
Is not He (best) Who made the earth a fixed abode, and placed rivers in the folds thereof, and placed firm hills therein, and hath set a barrier between the two seas? Is there any Allah beside Allah? Nay, but most of them know not! An-Naml (27:61)
This verse clearly shows that earth is fix and motionless.. Arabic is a vast language and every word has several meanings.

No verse clearly states modern science …interpretations are always made and mostly on the basis of existing knowledge and then we try to link them with holy verse saying that those people were knowing everything…

Brother, my blog (http://islammessageofpeace.blogspot.com/) works perfectily fine. This is just another lame excuse by a person who doesn't want to know what is the Truth.

Read my detailed reply, it has all the answers to your confusion. And it also has further references for you to do your homework on authentic Islamic sites (provided if you want to).

Brother Aadel, has added a lot of references for you to look at too... And we can go on and on to provide you with references. But, if you are so reluctant to open a single weblink for your initial question, what use is it to reply your counter questions.

Open your heart and mind, and then approach "REPLY-1" and "REPLY-2", if not, no harm done to Islam. As the readers themselves can evaluate what is the Truth.

Ati matbor is i feel considered as rationalist..

If everything is written in Quaran then all the inventions after 7th century must be present in quaran...Europeans and other Asians copy pasted Quaran and named themselves after every new discover...interpretations of verses is dependent on us ...u can mould it the way u want to...that doesnt means Holy Quaran is always rational and includes every thing in this universe...

Lastly i always want to be open to new things and knowledge..i will continue to study quaran though i m a Hindu...i hope every belligerent human at afaganistan, pakistan and Indian borders and interiors follow Holy Quaran and spread message of peace...

  13. @swap:
Considering that you may have technical problems with respect to internet (that you have to go to the Cafe), my apologies for the strong language.

I also appreciate that you being open-minded and keen in understanding the Qur'an and that you have been sticking with this post for so long.

Brother, first of all, it is not my interpretation. I have always ensured, that ny reply was backed up by sources and proofs (You can see references in [] boxes). Just like you are claiming against the Qur'an from your sources, I have stated the refutation from established sources. I am not putting my mind at work. I don't need to (although, replying your comments makes me think alot! :D ).

For whether to offer Zuhr Prayer twice, i.e. after a person travels to Makkah, I have already answered this.
    He has 2 options:
    1. If he knows that he is traveling he can pray Zuhr at his end and move to Makkah. If he reaches within the timeframe of the Zuhr Prayer, he doesn't need to pray, as he has already offered his Zuhr Prayer (i.e. he has fulfilled his requirements of praying Zuhr Prayer)
    2. If he is SURE that he will be reaching on time to Pray Zuhr in Makkah, he has the option of not to offer his Zuhr prayer at his inital location and pray Zuhr at destination. Although, the first condition (1.) is better for him, so that he does not miss Zuhr.
For this, you can read the scholarly reply at: http://www.islam-qa.com/en/ref/22387

Brother, Qur'an is not contradicting Science, it is in conformance with Science. See my post on "Qur'an is a book of Signs".

Brother, I really appreciate your studying the Qur'an. And it does'nt matter if you are a Hindu or Christian or Muslim to read it and understand it. The work on conformance of science with Qur'an have been done mostly with Non-Muslim Scientists (www.islam-guide.com). Dr. Maurice Baucille has done remarkabel study (He was a Christian then). I can email this book to you, if you want it.

Your comment: "i hope every belligerent human at afaganistan, pakistan and Indian borders and interiors follow Holy Quaran and spread message of peace..."

    Consider this!
According to a report at Fox News (dated 30-MAR-2008), Islam has surpassed Roman Catholicism, as 19.2% of the population of the world practice Islam, and are still growing, [http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,343336,00.html]

So, hypothetically, if all the 20% people on the earth were taught by the Qur'an about terrorism (which actually is not), this world would have been a complete chaos. But it is not so. People are living in peace and harmony. Out of these 20% a fraction or less have misunderstood the Qur'an by people with their own intention not for Islam. These Fractions are present in every community, Non just Muslim Community. And Islam clearly states that these people are not Muslims.

The Qur'an says in Chapter 5, verse 32:
"On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person--unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land--it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people.""

And on top of this, the Sahih Hadith of the Prophet is even stronger on this subject.

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 83, Number 49:

    Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr:

The Prophet said, "Whoever killed a Mu'ahid (a person who is granted the pledge of protection by the Muslims) shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise though its fragrance can be smelt at a distance of forty years (of traveling)."

Brother, what you need to do now is... read the references which are on positive side of the Qur'an, as you have done a lot of study of the Qur'an on the negative aspect (by people who want to defame Islam).

To start with read through the website (www.islam-guide.com) for your study. Also, I will try to keep you posted at your email ID too.

    Regards
    Zaffer

  14. Dear Sir,

There are both types of source - Positive and negative. Not every positive is right scientifically..and one should not use every negative to defy significance of holy book for Muslim population..Both sources are established but as i said earlier meaning of verses depends on person to person..if we try to link this with every modern scientific discovery then all nobels for science would have gone to Muslim experts or central asia would have been US or Europe in case of scientific developments which is not the case...

Quaran is studied by Non muslims experts as its new for them and not becoz it attracts world wide attention..vedic texts area also studied every where...Ayurveda and Yoga have been greatest contributions to human world out of so many other...

Although terrorism is not accepted by Islam but those fractions out of 20% causing unnecessary havoc in India killing lots of people..barring them from Islam cant help the cause...

finally as u feel that people write about negative side of Quaran just to defame it..i think its not acceptable...as there may be positives (as present in every religious book) , there can be negatives also which might be inconsistent with science...u have to accept it...or else as i said earlier every invention would have gone to Islamic world which is not the case...

  15. @swap: [This post has really become healthy, brother!!! Thanks to you!!!]

Your will find that Majority of the modern day discoveries and advancements in the established Science (which we learn through western education system all over the globe) started during the 17th and 18th centuries, which was Known as the "Age of Enlightment" (for the western world). [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Enlightenment]

The period before the Age of Enlightment was known as the "Dark Ages" [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Ages]. This was the period when the western world was at its cultural and economic decline and disruption. But the Dark Ages was only for the West, and not for the Islamic/Muslim World. The Islamic World was on the top of every stream of Knowledge. This period was known as the "Islamic Golden Age" [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_Golden_Age]. This period from documented traditions starts from 8th century, almost 10 centuries before the Age of Enlightment for the West.

What has this information got to do with Qur'an and Discoveries by the west (based on your claim "if we try to link this with every modern scientific discovery then all nobels for science would have gone to Muslim experts or central asia would have been US or Europe in case of scientific developments which is not the case...")?

William Harvey (1 April 1578 – 3 June 1657) was an English physician who was the first to describe correctly and in exact detail the systemic circulation and properties of blood being pumped around the body by the heart.

Having said that, let's go flashback in the Dark Age/Islamic Golden Age.

Ibn al-Nafis (born 1213) was an Arab Muslim polymath—a physician, anatomist, physiologist, surgeon, ophthalmologist, Hafiz, Hadith scholar, Shafi`i jurist and lawyer, Sunni theologian, Islamic philosopher, logician, Arabic novelist, science fiction writer, and scientist. He also wrote on Islamic psychology, Islamic sociology, astronomy, Islamic cosmology, futurology, geology, Arabic grammar and linguistics, and history.
Ibn al-Nafis is now most famous for being the first physician to describe the pulmonary circulation, or pulmonary transit of blood. His discovery disproved the thousand year-old theory of Galen who suggested invisible pores in the intraventricular septum. Ibn Nafis clearly stated that the "blood in the right ventricle of the heart must reach the left ventricule by way of the lungs alone and not through a passage connecting the ventricle, as Galen maintained." In addition, he is credited with early insight into capillary and coronary circulations, which in addition to the pulmonary circulation form the basis of the circulatory system, for which he is has been called the father of circulatory physiology, and "the greatest physiologist of the Middle Ages."[4] His work would not be surpassed until the 17th century, when the theory of the entire circulatory system, i.e. the continuous circular motion of the blood throughout the whole body, was proposed by William Harvey.

  16. There are a lot of Muslim scholars/scientists from 8th century onwards who have made major discoveries and inventions. Please find below the selective 10, so as to name a few:
    1. Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi "Father of Modern Surgery"
    2. Geber "Father of Chemistry",
    3. Ibn al-Nafis "First physician to describe pulmonary circulation",
    4. Abbas Ibn Firnas "Known for attempt at Aviation",
    5. Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī "Founder of Algebra: & : wrote a "Book on the appearance of the Earth/The image of the Earth" which was finished in the year 833; defining latitudes and longitudes",
    6. Taqi al-Din Muhammad ibn Ma'ruf "major contribution towards automated inventions",
    7. Al-Hasan (AlHazen) Ibn al-Haytham "Father of Modern Optics",
    8. Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna) "Father of Modern Medicine"
    9. Nasir al-Din al-Tusi "First to present empirical observational evidence of the Earth's rotation"
    10. Ibn Zuhr "Father of Experimental Surgery", for introducing experimental method into surgery, introducing the methods of human dissection and autopsy, inventing the surgical procedure of tracheotomy, performing the first parenteral nutrition of humans with a silver needle, discovering the cause of scabies and inflammation, discovering the existence of parasites, and refuting the theory of four humours.
    [Source: en.Wikipedia.org]

You can search their names on wikipedia and get more details and will find that they have contributed in the Islamic Golden Age/Western Dark Age.

Prince Charles, Heir to the British Monarchy in a recent public speech at Oxford University stated:
"If there is much misunderstanding in the West about the nature of Islam, there is also much ignorance about the debt our own culture and civilisation owe to the Islamic world. It is a failure, which stems, I think, from the straight-jacket of history, which we have inherited. The medieval Islamic world, from central Asia to the shores of the Atlantic, was a world where scholars and men of learning flourished. But because we have tended to see Islam as the enemy of the West, as an alien culture, society, and system of belief, we have tended to ignore or erase its great relevance to our own history."

  17. Now you can see that Islamic Golden Age was at its peak, because the scholars/scientists/contributors of Islamic Golden Age were very close to the Qur'an & Sunnah (memorization, applying it in their daily lives, understanding, research, etc.).

Now you can see why "Qur'an is studied by Non muslims Experts". They wanted to find out how in the world did Muslims achieve so much advancement. And in the process, they realize the Truth, and most of them accept Islam.

Scientists-Comments on the Scientific Miracles in the Holy Quran [http://www.thedeenshow.com/nonmuslims.php?id=63]

Today, although Islam is growing very fast, the quality of Muslims is not as the quality of those in the Islamic Golden Age. To some extent, We Muslims are responsible for this. Although a fraction of Muslims all over the globe are still following the footsteps of their predecessors of the Golden Age, majority of the Muslims are caught up with tackling their issue of bread, butter and shelter. In India, there was this report that was published, "Sachar Report on Social, Economic and Educational Status of the Muslim Community of India". Did you manage to read it, brother? Then you will surely understand why Majority of the contributions today are not from Muslims. [Here's the Link: http://ncm.nic.in/Sachar%20Report.pdf]

"The Rajinder Sachar Committee, appointed by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India was a high level committee for preparation of a report on the social, economic and educational status of the Muslim community of India.
It prepared a 403-page report that was tabled in Parliament on 30 November 2006 – 20 months after obtaining the terms of reference from the PMO.[1] It has come-up with this report with suggestions and solutions to include and mainstream Indian Muslims. The report is available from the Indian Government site.[2] and also at [1]
It is the first of its kind report and it suggests adoption of suitable mechanisms to ensure equity and equality of opportunity to Muslims in residential, work and educational spaces.[3] According to Sachar Committee report the status of Indian Muslims are below the conditions of Scheduled Castes and Tribes."
    [SOURCE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sachar_Committee]

Most of the non-Arab Muslim masses don't understand the Qur'an because they don't understand Arabic. It is like the example where you have the best book on Fluid Mechanics on your shelf, but you can not read it because you don't know English. So how on earth can we benefit from the Gems of the Qur'an, when we dont ponder over the verses of the Qur'an. This itself is a serious cause of concern.

Education of the masses is the one of the solution to dealing with those little fraction of deviant people (from all Religions-Hindu, Muslims, Christians, etc.).

    Hope that clarifies.

I will be emailing you 2 books, if you are interested in learning more about Islam (both from a Muslim's perspective and from a Non-Muslim scientist's perspective). Please let me know if I can email you those books. I think you should start reading these books first, and then go into the details of all the links I have posted in each of my replies (at your own lesuire). Waiting for your reply on this.

  18. @Swap Brother Zaffer has pointed out everything to you if you still need more signs i can give it to you.. for eg:-

"And [I swear by] the moon when it is full, you will mount up stage by stage! What is the matter with them, that they have no faith? (Qur'an, 84:18-20) After referring to the Moon, the above verses then say that people will mount up stage by stage.

The term tarkabunna comes from the verb rakiba, (to mount, walk on a path, follow, embark upon, set about, participate, or rule). In the light of these meanings, it is very likely that the expression "you will mount up stage by stage" refers to a vehicle to be boarded.

Indeed, the astronauts' spacecraft pass through each layer of the atmosphere ... See Moreone by one, and then begin to pass through the Moon's gravitational field. Thus, the Moon is reached by moving through individual layers. In addition, the swearing by the Moon in Surat al-Inshiqaq 18 further strengthens this emphasis, meaning that the verse may well be a sign that humanity will travel to the Moon. (Allah knows best.)

We may think, why didn't Allah simply write, "Man will travel to the moon"...why did He write such mysteries. Actually, man is unable to understand the words of Allah. Allah wrote it in His words, and since He is full of Majesty, His words are also full of Majesty!!!!!

Brother Swap to read the Quran you need to have an open mind and wisdom.. lets give you more signs and lets see how many of his signs can you deny ...

    THE PRESERVATION OF PHARAOH'S BODY

"We brought the tribe of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his troops pursued them out of tyranny and enmity. Then, when he was on the point of drowning, he [Pharaoh] said: "I believe that there is no god but Him in Whom the tribe of Israel believes. I am one of the Muslims." (Qur'an, 10:90)

However, this last-minute conversion was not ... See Moreaccepted, for it was not sincere. According to the Qur'an, Allah exclaimed:

"What, now! When previously you rebelled and were one of the corrupters? Today we will preserve your body so you can be a Sign for people who come after you. Surely many people are heedless of Our Signs." (Qur'an, 10:91-92)

    http://nature-phenomena.blogspot.com/2008/04/dead-body-of-rameses-ii-egyptian.html

now dont say this link doesnt open even if it doesnt google it.. You say quran was reveled 1500 - 1700 years ago scientist have recently found his body and is still well preserved as Allah states in the Quran No other scriptures points out about this..

His body was found from the sea , the presence of sea salts in his body & deposition of that salt helped to keep it mummified in the sea..

Anyways i shall post 2 signs on daily basis and u need research and find the truth urself..

  19. Being the oldest living languages, Sanskrit is the most scientific and unambiguous, according to a study by a NASA scientist Rick Briggs in 1985. Researchers at NASA have been looking at Sanskrit as a possible computer language because of its perfect morphology that leaves very little room for error.
    The Numbers 1 through 9
The so called Arabic numerals are actually Hindu numerals and even many Arab mathematicians admit that. During the 700's, the Arabs learned Hindu arithmetic from scientific writings of the Hindus and the Greeks. Then, in the 800's, a Persian mathematician wrote a book that was translated into Latin about 300 years later. This translation brought the Hindu-Arabic numerals into Europe.
The largest numbers the Greeks and the Romans used were 106 whereas Hindus used numbers as big as 1053 (i.e 10 to the power of 53) with specific names (Tallakshana) as early as 5000 B.C. during the Vedic period. Even today, the largest used number is Tera: 1012 (10 to the power of 12).

The concept of zero is referred to as shunya in the early Sanskrit texts and it is also explained in the Pingala’s Chandah Sutra (200 AD). In the Brahma Phuta Siddhanta of [[[Brahmagupta]] (400-500 AD), the zero is lucidly explained. The Hindu genius Bhaskaracharya proved that x divided by 0 = 4 (infinity) and that infinity however divided remains infinity. This concept was recognized in Hindu theology millennia earlier. The earliest recorded date for an inscription of zero (inscribed on a copper plate) was found in Gujarat (585 – 586 AD). Later, zero appeared in Arabic books in 770 AD and from there it was carried to Europe in 800 AD.
The concept of geometry emerged around 1000 BC in India from the practice of making fire altars in geometric shapes. The treatise of Surya Siddhanta (4th century AD) describe in amazing detail the science of trigonometry. Trigonometry was introduced in Europe 1200 years later in the 16th century.
All Buddhist as well as Hindu Mandalas and Yantras are complex forms of Geometrical shapes.
From India the sine function was introduced to the Arab world in the 8th century, where the term jya was transliterated into jiba or jyb. Early Latin translations of Arabic mathematical treatises mistook jiba for the Arabic word jaib, which can mean the opening of a woman's garment at the neck. Accordingly, jaib was translated into the Latin sinus, which can mean "fold" (in a garment), "bosom," "bay," or even "curve." Hence our word "sine."
he Sanskrit text, by the famous Hindu mathematician, Baudhayana in his Baudhayana Sulbha Sutra of the 6th century BC mentions this ratio as approximately equal to 3. The Hindu mathematician, Aryabhatta, in 499 AD worked out the value of Pi to the fourth decimal place as [3x (177/1250) = 3.1416]. In 825 AD one Arab mathematician Mohammad Ibna Musa said: This value has been given by the Hindus [Indians] (62832/20,000 = 3.1416).
he so-called Pythagoras Theorem that the square of the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle equals to the sum of the square of the other two sides was documented by the famed Hindu mathematician Baudhayana in his 6th century BC treatise called Baudhayana Sulba Sutra

  20. In Surya Siddhanta, dated 400-500 AD, the ancient Hindu astronomer Bhaskaracharya states, "Objects fall on the earth due to a force of attraction by the earth. Therefore, the earth, planets, constellations, moon, and sun are held in orbit due to this force." Approximately 1200 years later (1687 AD), Sir Isaac Newton rediscovered this phenomenon and called it the Law of Gravity.
The Atharva Veda gave birth to Ayur Veda, the traditional system of Hindu medicine and it was developed around 5000 years ago. This system of medicine is still widely used today in India under the term Ayur Vedic Medicine.
The Greek physician Hippocrates (460-377 BCE) is honored as the father of medicine. However, well before Hippocrates, Maharshi Charaka had already written the Charaka Samhitã ("Handbook of a Physician") in 500 BCE.
The west is fond of proclaiming Hippocrates (460 – 377 BC) as the father of medicine, but way before him in 500 BC Maharishi Charaka wrote the famous Charaka Samhita or Physicians’ Handbook. The Charaka Samhita went into great detail to describe human anatomy, pathology, diagnostic procedures, and treatment for various diseases. Charaka defined eight major medical disciplines of Ayur Veda: Shailya Chikitsa (surgery), Shaalakya Chikitsa (head, eye, nose, throat), Kaaya Chikitsa (mental health), Kaumarbhrutya Chikitsa (pediatrics), Agada Tantra (toxicology), Rasaayana Tantra (Pharmacology), Vaajeekarna Tantra (reproductive medicine). Charaka also described the functions of the heart and the circulatory system in great detail. The Charaka Samhita was widely translated in various languages and Charaka was a respected medical authority in both the Arab and Roman empires.
Sushruta as early as 600 BC used cheek skin to perform plastic surgery to restore and reshape human nose, ears, and lips with incredible results. In his treatise, Shushruta Samhita, he classified surgery into eight types: aaharya (extracting solid bodies), bhedya (excision), eshya (probing), lekhya (sarification), vedhya (puncturing), visravya (extracting fluids), and sivya (suturing). Sushruta worked with 125 kinds of surgical instruments including scalpels, lancets, needles, catheters, etc. Sushruta even devised non-invasive surgical treatments with the aid of light rays and heat. He conducted 300 types of operations such as extracting solid bodies, excision, incision, probing, puncturing, evacuating fluids and suturing. Ancient Indians were also the first to perform amputations, caesarean and cranall surgeries.
Over 2600 years ago Sushrata & his team conducted complicated surgeries like cataract, artificial limbs, cesareans, fractures, urinary stones and also plastic surgery and brain surgeries.
The science of yoga originated from the Vedas. Today many variations of Hatha Yoga, in the form of a system of exercises, are used in many countries for the preservation and growth of the human body.
The game of chess was invented in India and was originally called Ashtapada (sixty-four squares).
"Ashtapada" Sanskrit for spider -"a legendary being with eight legs" was played with dice on an 8x8 checkered board. There were no light and dark squares like we see in today's chess board for 1,000 years.
Later this game came to be known as chaturanga. The Sanskrit name Chaturanga means 'quadripartite' — the four angas (divided into four parts). The earliest known form of chess is two-handed chaturanga, Sanskrit for "the 4 branches of the army." Like real Indian armies at that time, the pieces were called elephants, chariots, horses and foot soldiers. Unlike modern chess, chaturanga was mainly a game of chance; results depended on how well you rolled the dice. In 600 AD this game was learned by Persians who named it Shatranj (derived from the original word Chaturanga).

  21. 1. Hey Mubin, feels good to be back. I felt like Lucifer in exile after Mumbai degenerated to Indore. Hah! Thanks to net, I am back!
    2. Awesome research and explorations of the Holy Quran. No kidding, these guys (whosoever wrote them) gotto be real informed.
    3. Here's a different perspective (as usual) from my end, and like always, I warn you this will be winding. So, take your time...
'Agantuk' (The Stranger) a movie by Satyajit Ray.
Plotline: A stranger, claiming to be the long-lost younger uncle of a married woman, seeks a week’s shelter, at her place in Calcutta. She has her husband and a son for family. She’s devastated. Her family had long forgotten this vagabond, globe-trotting family member – taken him for dead. But his man was a gem of his time. But he recollects reason of his exploits only for his niece at the lunch table on the day of his arrival. He says:
“One day, when I was very young, I came across a picture in my history book. It was a picture of a bison – not one photographed but drawn on the walls of Altamira caves by ancient caveman! Who taught them such raw, bold art? The bison looked alive, jumping out of the wall, its nostrils flayed in anger, its horns coiled and ready to rip through the adversary – which great artesian drew this? Leonardo, Michelangelo can be put to shame. I wondered. I wondered and wondered and so I became a wanderer. There is another reason – in German they term it ‘Vander lust’!”
To cut a long story short, out of resulting mistrust for the stranger and complexities, the husband invites a cut-throat lawyer friend of his. He starts asking him questions about his beliefs. At one point the uncle declares that he has had n-number of experiences with various aboriginals and tribes across the world and that he has spent great times with them. When the lawyer asks him if he advocates the unrestrained promiscuity and cannibalism among these tribal as something better than the decaying civility of city-life, the uncle replies “No! These are unacceptable. You know what’s acceptable? It’s acceptable when a single man can dictate a single order and a single push of a button can annihilate an entire living, thriving city of human beings. This is civility!”
On his way out he makes his grandson remember one simple advice, “Konodin Kupomonduk hoyo na”, which means ‘be anyone, but never the frog in a well’.

    ReplyDelete
  22. (contd.)

I recollected this to set the tone for my next few observations:
    1. The Egyptian, Inca & Greek civilizations were highly advanced scientifically, socio-culturally and also politically – thriving even before the times of Jesus (if at all ‘he’ was there)
    2. In all cultures/civilization the most popular mode of propagation of social norms and rules were done by soothsayers who doubled up as musicians. I recall similar influences in the area I come from. Fakirs of Bengal are well known for their exploits in music. An important characteristic of their music was that along with being devotional in nature their dual meanings were striking. They discussed heavily on physiology, psychology, metaphysics and philosophies pertaining to universal bodies. For example the following first couple of lines from one of Lalan Fakir’s verse:
“Tomar ghorey bash kore kara, O mon! janonaa.
Tomar ghore boshot kore koyjonaa – Mon jaanona!

Ekjone chobi ankey ekmoney, Oho rey mon!
    Arekjone boshey boshey rong makhey!
Abar shei chobikhan noshto kore konjona – konjona?

Tomar ghore boshot kore koyjonaa – Mon jaanona!

    Translation:
“Who doth dwell in your house – O Mind, you know not.
How many dwell in your house – Mind, you know not.

‘One’ sincerely paints the pictures, O mind!
‘The Other’ just smears the colors on self.
And then again who’s the ‘Another’ who destroys picture, colors, et al?

How many dwell in your house – O Mind, you know not!”

Hmm… does this smell of the 19th century philosophical doctrine of Id, Ego and Superego? But this was written 300 years back!
    3. Time, according to me, has got nothing to do with realization. Religion is just one kind of paraphrasing the realizations. It has no such characteristics as ‘irrevocable’, ‘unchanging’, ‘the only truth’. The truth is – today’s truth is tomorrow’s lie, that’s the way it transforms.
Quran is undoubtedly the youngest and most evolved of all religious scriptures. However, humans are hedonist by birth. None can change their basic nature of using brains, only to derive disproportionate higher returns. Minimum effort is to get Maximum value. For this very reason, for the mere reason of sustenance and social corrections, Crusade, Jihad, Kurukshetra, World Wars and et al. These are inventions of humans and so are the reasons behind them – religion or social orders. For the sake of change things decay, transform, evolve, mutate – as did Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, et al. A mere book in black and white doesn’t determine the fate of universe. But on the other hand, it does provide a reference point for differentiation.
    Think about it…
